Expedition equipment

The equipment is important ofcourse and especially in demanding weather conditions. What I focused a lot on is the issue of cold and how to handle feet and fingers. This applies both during hiking, climbing and when sleeping in the tent. A clothing layersystem works really well for the most part. At the bottom, there is a thin wool underlay with merino wool and at the outer layer I have a jacket that is wind- and waterproof. In between, I adjust with thicker undercoating and fleece material. At very low temperatures I take the thick down jacket and then I have up to 5-6 layers but always the jacket on the outside. For extreme weather I always keep the Gore-Tex pants and jacket on the outside. However, it is important to learn how the body works and to balance the load, the number of layers and the temperature. This takes its time and requires patience. It took me three expeditions to get a proper understanding of this.

My hands protect me with the best I could find in gloves and mittens. I use a liner inside the glove and also use an exchangeable woollayer inside the glove. I use four differnt types of protection for my hands:

  • Rock climbing gloves
  • Easy trekking gloves
  • Cold & demanding trekking gloves
  • High altitude mittens
  • Summit extreme mittens
